Career – Investment Banking

What is it?

A career in investment banking can be very diverse including; trading, hedge funds, asset management, systems analysis, compliance and more. Most investment banking opportunities will exist in very large, global firms and some of the roles will be high pressure and fast paced but very financially rewarding. Investment banking is all about generating wealth and making money grow for large investors. They rely heavily on strong negotiators and sellers as well as robust systems and operate within a heavily regulated environment.

What skills and qualifications will I need?

Most banks offer employment or internships based on individual merit and achievement – you are likely to need at least a 2:1 from any discipline but if you are specifically interested in a career in IT you will need a technical degree.  You should be able to demonstrate that you have an interest in the financial markets and that you are numerate.  It will be an advantage if you have good analytical and communication skills – both written and verbal.

What else do I need to know?

The City of London is the UK hub of banking activity, but there are a number of opportunities for work abroad in this sector if you are willing to travel.  As the industry is an international one, there are chances to work non-conventional working hours.  There will be opportunities for career and salary progression and you will have the opportunity to take on responsibility quickly if you work hard.  Banks generally offer a good package in terms of holiday, private health insurance etc and many have their own sports facilities.

Top tip

Be sure that you have the stomach for the pressure particularly if you are aiming for certain roles such as trading. If you think Investment Banking is for you, an internship is the very best way to know for sure.

Where can I get more information?

The big banks offer a number of opportunities including internships and training programmes for students and graduates – look them up on the internet and find out about the application process. They offer a fast-track way of learning about banking and show you the roles within the bank. You can choose to specialise when you have found out more about the different departments.
