Role profile
As an Engineering Summer Intern, you will work as a part of a project team, alongside skilled and experienced individuals who are motivated to train and coach you on the day-to-day skills required to work closely with our customers, both internal and external. You will learn the tools, techniques and approaches used by engineering professionals and apply them in a controlled environment to ensure projects are delivered on time, to quality and to budget.
As an Intern within BAE Systems, you will be placed into one of our specialist engineering teams. Each team will have a specific focus which could include: Cyber Security, Financial Crime, Digital Transformation or Communications Intelligence. You will be given a project role for the duration of your time with us; this will depend on your current and aspirational skills and will be one of the below:
  • Software Engineer
  • Test Analyst
  • Data Analyst
  • Electronic Engineer (Guildford only)
Depending on your project role, you could be working on one or more of the below tasks:
Software Engineer
  • Assist in the design, test and implementation of software which forms part of a properly engineered system
  • Overcome development obstacles to deliver quality code on time
  • Helping to specify user/system interfaces
  • Assist in producing detailed designs and documents using required standards, methods and tools
  • Understand and translate a business design into a logical design, for a simple software application
  • Produce physical designs that describe the required structure and behaviour of a simple software application characterised by low-risk non-functional requirements
Test Analyst
  • Define and create test cases from the analysis of functional specifications
  • Interpret and execute sets of simple test scripts using agreed methods and standards
  • Check test results and document test failures and successes compared with pre-determined criteria, in accordance with agreed standards, reporting test results to your manager and/or other colleagues in a clear and concise manner
  • Assist colleagues and clients/users in defining acceptance tests for systems
  • Assist colleagues and clients/users in reviewing system requirements in terms of testability
  • Assist in performing maintenance through the analysis of log files and system faults
  • Contribute to maintenance and installation work
Data Analyst
  • Carrying out research, data collection and analysis
  • Evaluate and reconcile information gathered from multiple sources
  • Build basic process maps in the support of analysis work
  • Designing and implementing technical solutions to match client expectations
Electronic Engineer
  • Contribute to the full engineering lifecycle, from working with clients through to every aspect of hardware design and manufacture
  • Implement complex signal processing algorithms in VHDL
  • Design switch mode power supplies, working on low power embedded systems, developing ruggedized devices for challenging environments
  • Assisting colleagues to pitch new ideas to clients
  • Manage multiple assignments independently, with support from colleagues
  • Carrying out research, data collection and analysis
On occasion, engineering interns will be asked to work on external client sites. This can mean working away from your base location. In this instance, all travel and expense costs will be covered. This will not be applicable for all engineering roles; i f you have concerns about this, please speak to your recruitment contact.
What to expect on the programme
BAE Systems Applied Intelligence is a fast paced and agile business. The more you put into the internship programme the more you will get out, building lasting professional relationships. As a summer intern you will be part of our Early Careers community, which will support and guide you throughout your time with us. It is not all work and no play, the Early Career community regularly runs social events and activities for all to get involved with.
We would also encourage our interns to immerse themselves within their teams, who will be on hand to support you, providing on the job training, advice and networking opportunities. During your 12 weeks you will be given a stretch assignment, which will be a chance for you to work with other interns on a project outside the remit of your day to day work.

  • £16,800 per annum (pro-rata)

  • Individuals who demonstrate outstanding performance on the internship will be considered for a permanent Early Careers position on completion of their final year
Entry requirements
  • On track to achieve a 2:1 in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths discipline. (Other disciplines will be considered if you are able to demonstrate significant extra-curricular interest in Engineering.)
  • 128 UCAS points or equivalent (as per the 2017 UCAS tariff)
Desired technical ability
Aptitude in one or more of the following:
  • Java - Java JEE, JSP, JSF, EJB, Spring, JDBC
  • Infrastructure - systems administration, network security & engineering, protocols (TCP/IP)
  • Microsoft - C#, C++, .NET, SharePoint, ODBC
  • Data processing - Hadoop, Oracle, R, SQL
  • Web - HTML, XML, SOAP
  • O/S - Linux, Windows
  • Mobile - iOS, Android,
  • MATLAB, Maple
  • Microsoft Office - specifically Microsoft Excel - Lookups, pivot tables
Electronic engineering specific:
Aptitude in one or more of the following:
  • Digital circuit design
  • Analogue/RF circuit design
  • Embedded/microprocessor software development (C, C++)
  • PCB testing techniques
  • PCB manufacturing process
  • Digital Signal Processing
  • Hardware Description Language (HDL) development (VHDL, Verilog)
  • Driver development (C)
Desired competencies
  • Excellent analytical and numerical skills
  • The aptitude for solving complex/technical problems
  • Clear and effective communication skills
  • Articulate, both verbally and in writing
  • Objective and logical with an enquiring and creative mind
  • Ability to work as part of a team

Security clearance
Only those with the permanent and unrestricted right to live and work in the UK will be considered for a position within BAE Systems Applied Intelligence. Due to the nature of our work successful candidates for this role will be required to go through SC clearance prior to starting with us.
