What is it?
In a nutshell it’s the organisation, storage and distribution of goods. Getting things from factories, to warehouses and out to consumers. There are a number of roles in different sectors – from air freight and aviation to shipping or marine and ocean freight. It will also include fleet management and HGVs and can also include roles in Supply Chain departments.
What skills and qualifications will I need?
You’ll need good communication skills, as you’ll be dealing with people a lot of the time. Business Studies, Maths and Statistics will feature highly – predicting where goods are needed based on previous figures – if goods are coming from abroad you’ll need to factor in transportation times and delivery restrictions. You could be working with several different kinds of organisations including HM Customs.
If you work for a retailer, you’ll have links with buying and merchandising departments as well as warehouses and transport departments – making sure everything is in stock for a big promotion for example.
What else do I need to know?
The role can be varied and global depending on the company you choose to work for. You should be able to think logically and enjoy problem solving.
Try and get an internship or work placement with a company to find out more – it will help you to learn more about the role and may help secure a job when you have obtained your degree. High street retailers have their own logistics departments, or you could contact a logistics company which handles distribution for their clients.
